Sugar rush financials don't mean we've dodged the COVID bullet
One of this week's big headlines was Nintendo making bank over the last three months. This was primarily from Animal Crossing: New Horizons really hitting its stride in terms of sales, but that 400% increase won't last forever, especially when you realize the drought of games that Nintendo has.
This is representative of the industry as a whole. While Sony and Microsoft have games announced that are sure to be next-gen launch titles, the drought that's hitting Nintendo is sure to hit them later down the road. It will be interesting the next quarter compared to this one. I'm pretty sure that console sales will be through the roof, but it will be interesting to see how game sales perform a few months after next-gen hits.

Conflict minerals: Which gaming companies may have funded human rights abuses in 2019?
This one is a deep dive into the weeds, so get your coffee and buckle up for a whole world that you've probably never considered.
Articles like these are important to know about because it's important that we know how our products are being made. Some will not care, while others will take a huge interest in it. This process of buying the materials needed to create the technology that we love is incredibly complex, so no company on here is 100% perfect.
However, Apple does well with being transparent of where it's getting its materials and the struggles the go through to try and make it ethical. This is a bright spot for Apple, who has been in the hot set over the past few weeks.
Microsoft and Sony, the companies creating the coveted next-gen consoles, are included in this report. Microsoft is doing well with its reporting but Sony doesn't seem to taking it seriously enough. This might have an impact of those who are concerned about ethical business practices and their decision for next-gen.
These were the biggest ones that stuck out to me. There's a lot in this article, so dive in and educate yourself!

Microsoft cuts xCloud iOS testing early as its future on Apple devices remains unclear
Apple is once again in the hot seat this week because of their rigid app rules. Last week we talked about the 30% pay cut and how it's a tough deal for smaller developers, but this week we're looking at two tech giants and an app that could revolutionize game streaming.
Based on different people's takes about what this means, it looks like xCloud streaming won't make it to iOS devices in full form. I hope I'm wrong, but I think Apple's demands are too high and Microsoft isn't willing to meet them. It also seems like people are taking Microsoft's side on this issue, saying that Apple is in the wrong for requiring such a high pay cut and being anti-consumer.
Apple has announced that services like xCloud and Stadia violate App store guidelines because there would be too many games to go individually review through the services. This is incredibly limiting for a lot of apps but it signals a dark future for gamers on iOS.
What do you think about this?

Blizzard employees share salary details amid unrest over pay disparity
This is a huge, breathing story from this week that's constantly updating. Jason Scheier broke this article and has been keeping it updated via his Twitter page. Since it's publishing, multiple employees have come out about their issues with wage that's not enough to make ends meet.
Right now, Blizzard employees are creating a list of demands for fair pay that they hope to present to Blizzard's management soon. This is one of the biggest unionized efforts in the game industry to date.
It's absolutely insane that some employees are being paid less than half of the median for their position in the industry. I've talked about this before, but it's simply people in power abusing lower employee's passions by paying them less than they deserve. I'm willing to bet a large portion of these employees like Blizzard games and the opportunity to work on them, which is why they've put up with this low pay.
Now, these people are coming together to demand more after the wildly successful year Blizzard has had. My fingers are crossed that the employees come out on top.

What Fall Guys can teach us about the nature of humanity
Indie darling Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout has stolen the hearts of many gamers and streamers. Like many games today, it's popularity came from a lot of streamers playing it in Beta. This hype for release was capitalized by Fall Guys' developer, Mediatonic, releasing as a PS Plus free game of the month on launch day.
I really do love this game. It's goofy, fun, and challenging all at the same time. I daresay it's my favorite battle royale (that's more of a joke because I'm not a huge fan of BR games in general). I haven't played much of it yet, but it's really the perfect game to relax with after a day of work.
If you're playing on PS4, hit me up! My user name is MisterMcCurry.
p.s. the Twitter page for this game is absolutely hilarious. Props to the community manager for perfectly emulating the hilarity of this game.

A newsletter milestone approaches!!!
Welcome to the 50th issue of Load Save! ๐
I want to start this issue off by saying thank you to everyone who's subscribed, read, and been a fan of the newsletter. Without all of you, I wouldn't have stuck with this. There's been some tiring weeks where it seemed like I had no time to curate this, but I was encouraged to stick it out because of you.
So whether you've been along for the ride the whole time, a new subscriber, or a new reader, thank you! Here's to 50 more!
This week was crazy. We all thought for a minute that Trump was going to ban video games because of a Executive Order he issued regarding ByteDance (owner of TikTok) and Tencent (owner/partial owner of a ton of gaming companies). Luckily, it's been clarified that the EO won't affect gaming, so we dodged a bullet there.
Other than that, we had the PlayStation State of Play, which resulted in one of the craziest stories of the past few weeks. Keep scrolling to learn more!
We also take a look at:
Apple refuses to play nice with Stadia and xCloud
Blizzard employees are fighting for higher pay
What Fall Guys teaches us about ourselves
Again, thanks so much supporting the newsletter for so long. I can't wait to see it grow and build a community.
Stay safe and enjoy the read!

PlayStation Showcase Game Was 'Stolen,' Say Former Developers [Update]
The PlayStation State of Play happened this week (you can watch it here), and while it was pretty cool, this is the craziest story to come out of it.
Aeon Must Die, a title announced during the livestream, apparently was made under terrible working conditions. It was allegedly so bad that the developers quit the week before this livestream and the trailer was made by artists who didn't even receive contacts.
On top of that, the devs apparently were forced to use pirated or free-to-use software to create this game. I'm sure this added to the stress of development. Here's a link to a Twitter thread that has some screenshots from the DropBox that contains all this info. Note: not much of this information has been confirmed, so take it with a grain of salt.
My question is: why did PlayStation still show this? Were they unaware of the working situation? You would imagine that disgruntled employees were reach out to PlayStation and ask them not to show a game that was created in such awful conditions. I'm interested to see if PlayStation will issue a response to this.

Paper Mario: The Origami King Requires You to Unlock 3 Helpful Features
This is crazy to me. Who would think it's a good idea to hide accessibility features as an in-game unlockable? I understand that these features aren't the best accessibility features (Nintendo really skimped out on those), but still, this should have been realized in dev.
This is why accessibility teams in game development is so important. Nintendo is a huge company (one who's profits increased 400% in the last 3 months) so I'm sure they can afford an accessibility team to add the necessary accessibility options from the ground up.
I am holding out hope that the advertised accessibility options in Pikmin 3 is a real sign of change for Nintendo's development.

Why Free Halo Infinite Multiplayer Is Such A Smart Move
After Microsoft revealed that Halo: Infinite's multiplayer will be free-to-play, I was honestly shocked. I've never truly played a Halo game, but this news made me excited to try out a series that has been so loved for so many years.
There's very little chance that I'll buy the Xbox Series X. I'm pretty set on PS5, but I'm excited for Xbox is bringing to the industry with Game Pass and ideas like a flagship title including a "free" aspect. Mix this news with Microsoft trying to launch a version of xCloud for PCs so that lower end rigs can stream higher end games and you get a ton of new gamers in Xbox's ecosystem.
If everything works as planned, I'll be playing Halo: Infinite's multiplayer (and maybe even campaign) through Game Pass and xCloud on my Mac that's running Windows 10. Sheesh, next-gen is CRAZY!

I Played The Avengers Beta And I'm Not Excited
The Avengers game is... struggling. If you're like me, this game never looked great, but the idea of playing as the Avengers with friends in a game that's supposedly more deep than Ultimate Alliance sounds awesome! According to the first weekend of beta for this game, it doesn't deliver.
I've heard multiple perspectives about the beta, but most of them boil down to the gameplay not being fun. It falls into the trap that so many superhero games before it has: monotonous fighting of the same AI.
Couple this Crystal Dynamics' (developer) not caring about gamers who want to play as Spider-Man and this could be the first "Marvel" video game that really sucks.

Before You Go
A postponed celebration
Thanks for reading! Feel free to dance around your space to celebrate the 50th issue, but my planned livestream will not be happening due to unreliable internet on my end.
I'm pretty bummed about this, but I'm still planning to return to streaming soon! Maybe we'll have a huge blowout closer to the one year anniversary of Load Save?
Make sure to follow my Twitch to get a notification when I go live!
I'm looking forward to what gaming holds for us in the future. I'll see you next time!
